Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked betting on various card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games while competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The definite advancement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would often challenge one another. Howard was able to access some of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. He relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
