Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he loved gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he played extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he might boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The real improvement in his skills happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently play against one another. He was able to access some of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
